Community support during the COVID-19 outbreak

March 23rd, 2020 in News by 0 Comments

During these extraordinary times we’re so lucky to have a community that is pulling together. Here’s where to get support, offer help and find out more about what’s happening in the community. We’ll update the page as things develop.

Date of post 23 March 2020.

Community support

Local community support is being developed and communicated through the Community Kindness Kirkhill, Kiltarlity, Beauly and Muir of Ord facebook group. Go here if you are looking for support or can offer some help. It also includes updates on local businesses and services and tips for keeping occupied!

The group are also coordinating the distribution of community postcards that offer help to people that are self-isolating. Help can include picking up shopping, posting mail, getting hold of urgent supplies and offering a friendly phone call.

Kirkhill Community Cupboard

Brenda Dunthorne is leading on a project to develop a Community Cupboard to provide supplies to those that need them. Items can be dropped off in the blue barrel at front door of Kirkhill Community Centre. Please make sure you adhere to the social distancing guidelines if there are other folks around.

Please do not donate fresh, homemade or frozen items – we will let you know when we can accept these.

Once there is good supply of donations we will “open for business” and start getting the message out there.

This will develop and evolve over the weeks to come and may include delivering within the village and surrounding areas.

The smallest of donations will be very welcome – a tin of soup, a tub of custard if that is all you can manage will be fantastic. The main users may be the elderly households of one or two persons so small packets/tins will be best.

Here are suggestions of items :

  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Tins of soup; beans; sweetcorn; peas
  • Tins of meat/fish
  • Diluting juice
  • Tins of puddings
  • Tins of fruit
  • Jam
  • Oatcakes
  • Biscuits
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • UHT milk
  • Cleaning liquids
  • Washing up liquid
  • Toilet rolls
  • Porridge oats
  • Breakfast Cereal
  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Cake (e.g. ginger bread loafs)
  • Pet food

Collections of soaps, shampoo etc from hotels will be useful too.

Keeping active

At this time it’s important to keep active and take outdoor exercise when we can. We are fortunate to live in area with loads of opportunities to walk, cycle and ride. Reelig Wood is on our doorstep with tall trees walks and a balance trail and xylophone in the Upper Reelig Community Wood. Try Walkhighlands for other walks in the area.

When out and about please follow the current advice to:

  • Stay in your local area
  • Don’t take unnecessary risks
  • Practice social distancing
